Do you believe your health is the cornerstone of your entire life? If we do not have our health what do we have, right? It affects everything from how you interact with your family and in your relationships, to how you perform at your job, and how you feel every day at the most basic level. Being healthy and well is the first step to gaining control over your life and reaching your goals. Here are 3 important healthy living secrets that will boost both your mind and body.

1. Exercise Does More Than Help You Lose Weight

We often think of exercise as a means to lose weight, and it’s a powerful tool in that regard. But it does so much more! Exercise helps keep our heart and lungs healthy. It also keeps the muscles in your body strong and capable of handling everyday challenges. Even more than that, exercise is a powerful antidepressant! Our mental state plays a huge role in how “healthy” we feel, and even just a short walk can give you an endorphin boost that will help you think positive. The one thing I hear most from people is that they do not have the time or energy for exercise. With how crazy our lives can get, how busy we are, how much time do you spend on yourself each day? If I could guess, not that much right? Maybe, 5-10 minutes a day to yourself in between work, taking care of our families, it can be exhausting, but we can’t pour from an empty cup. We have to take care of ourselves before we go and take care of everyone else! When you make exercise a part of your daily routine, you will feel stronger, have more energy and keep the negative feelings at bay. Exercise can be as simple as taking a walk around the block or a more intense workout at the gym.

2. Food Is Great Medicine For Healthy Living

Although the pharmaceutical industry has done a great job of coming up with medications that treat severe diseases like diabetes and heart conditions, we have a plethora of medicine in our kitchens, and I’m not talking about the vitamins on top of the fridge. Whole foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and raw grains have nutrients in them that are critical to our bodies’ healthy functions.  Vitamin C plays a vital role in a healthy immune system, and it is found in a variety of foods like citrus fruits, bell peppers, dark green leafy vegetables, and even peas. Salmon and other fatty fish are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for heart and brain health. Sure, you can take all of these things in pill form, but they’re not as readily absorbed by your body as they are when they come from the original source.

I have owned my own Wellness Center for the past 20 years. The number one thing we teach at our Wellness Center is that FOOD is the greatest medicine.  When my mother was diagnosed with Cancer, I began to learn how food plays a part in our health. My mission now is to teach others that we can prevent disease with food before they occur. Our food is our fuel, what we eat is literally what we are!  If you’re driving a big truck that needs diesel fuel would you fill it with regular gasoline? Probably not! Our bodies need nutrition to thrive, to think clearly, to move, to react, and so much more.

3. THE SUN IS YOUR FRIEND

Have you heard of seasonal depression, which many people get during the winter months, while they’re stuck inside? During winter months especially in colder climates, low levels of Vitamin D is a major contributor to seasonal depression.  40% of your body exposed to 20 minutes of natural sunlight is all that you need to get the daily recommended amount of Vitamin D.  Make a point to get outside as often as you can. Just let the bright, natural light warm your body and your soul.
